What is your name?
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Memphis, TN and currently live in Virginia Beach.
What is your education level?
I have a degree in Business Administration and seeking a degree in Fine Arts.
What is your profession?
I’m a fashion designer
What skills or talents do you need to do this position?
The most important thing you should have when considering a career in fashion design would be a true passion for it. Being a fashion designer does have its glamorous moments, but 90% of the time it’s long hours and repetitive work. If there isn’t true passion, you will lose interest very quickly.
When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
The first time I sketched a design and brought it to life (made it into a garment). The satisfaction I get from that process is unexplainable. I completely fell in love! At that moment I knew that this is what I wanted to do. It was my gift from God and I was passionate about it. When you’re passionate about something you pour yourself into it. You become relentless and that’s exactly what happened to me.
What was the first article of clothing you ever designed and was it wearable?
It was a cotton purple shirt that I made when I was 12 years old. It had an elastic collar (which my grandmother helped me put in) so I could wear it up around my neck or around my shoulders (which my mama would never let me do). It was wearable and I was very proud of myself. Before making that shirt I would make pillow cases and stuff them with scraps of leftover fabric I found around my grandmother’s boutique. Then my brother and I would stand outside the door and try to sell them LOL.
Where do your design inspirations come from?
Vintage Dior is a huge inspiration for me. Simple things are the most beautiful to me. I’m also extremely inspired by art whether its paintings, sculptures even music all of these invoke ideas for me.
How would you describe your personal sense of style?
That’s hard for me to answer. Of course I love classic silhouettes but when getting dressed I think about the feeling it gives me. Sometimes I go for a very soft polished look and sometimes I do the complete opposite, or sometime I mix the two together. It all depends on “the feel” I’m going for, if that makes sense…but , I don’t over do it.
What would surprise others about you or your company?
For a long time I was hesitant to share my garments with others. I would basically design for myself and sometimes family. Even though people always complimented my work, I would still keep it to myself. I didn’t go to school for fashion design. I taught myself pattern making and construction. I believe my talent is a gift from God. God blesses us all with our own unique talents and this just happens to me mine and I’m so grateful. I’m a very very reserved person but when I’m talking about what I love I have plenty to say lol.
What advice would you give someone who wants to go into your line of work?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. You can’t advance if your hiding your talent. Take full advantage of every opportunity and don’t let other discourage you from your goals and dreams. Always follow up when you meet new contacts. Last but not least be true to yourself!
