Name: Rachel Beels Ruiz
Education: Associates of Science in Fashion Design & additional certificates in Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop
Profession: Associate Designer at Lily Bleu in Carson, CA
What does your every day job entail?
What don’t I do! On any given day, I am surfing the web for inspiration, sketching detailed technical designs for our patten maker, choosing fabrics to be cut in different patterns, sourcing new trims, making line sheets for different retailers, meeting with fabric reps., approving screen prints, or meeting with buyers to show the line & place orders.
What skills or talents do you need to do this position?
You need to be the ultimate multi-tasker to be a successful designer. I’m usually juggling a few different tasks at a time and each one needs to get done & done right! I do carry a notebook with me just to make sure I nothing gets lost in the mix.
You also need to have the ability to visualize in your mind how a garment should look when you are creating it; what fabric will suit the style, should there be any contrasting fabrics or trims, what sleeve/waistline/hem length etc. is right to achieve the look you are going for? I’m not going to say that I’ve never made some ugly stuff, because that would be a lie! lol But as you gain experience, your sense of what works & what doesn’t become more astute and you learn to trust yourself and your creative vision.
What has been your biggest challenge in your profession?
The biggest challenge by far is just dealing with all of the different personalities & egos. Enough said.
What would surprise others about your company?
We do 95% of our manufacturing domestically. Made in the USA!
What advice would you give someone who wants to go into your line of work?
Don’t even consider going into this field unless you have a true passion for clothing and design because being a designer is hard work and extremely stressful. You will be responsible for making sure that each garment is produced correctly. Also, when the buyers send those sales reports from your retailers, your stuff better be moving!
You also MUST be a team player and an excellent communicator because you will be working alongside many different individuals every day.
We are working on our website as we speak! You will be able to visit us at Lily-Bleu.com.
We sell our line in Nordstrom & Bloomingdales under the name, Lily Bleu and Jenna & Jesse. We are so excited about our new Spring line that will be hitting the stores this January. Please go & check it out!
