Back then, I used a hair relaxer once every couple of months. I’ve always had really thick hair, but my hair would only grow a couple of inches past my shoulders back then. Breakage was a constant issue.
After years of relaxing, I finally grew tired of the expense & lengthy salon visits so I stopped perming my hair. Six months into my transition, I felt like I was failing miserably at going natural so I decided to quit this nappy hair thing and return to having straight hair. I booked an appointment at a salon known for it’s short cuts. The beautician applied the hair relaxer and my scalp started to heat up immediately. No really, I felt my skin cooking. I told the beautician that my scalp felt like it was engulfed in flames, and she kindly reminded me that she was using a mild formula. (sigh) Well, I didn’t want to look partially relaxed, so I sat in the chair and continued to bake my flesh for beauty. Once she was finished styling my hair, I looked fabulous! I had an amazing asymmetrical cut that was full of body and bounce. The only problem was that my scalp still felt very warm and raw. I took a couple of Advil and went to bed happy with my super cute hair. The next morning I jumped out of bed, snatched off my scarf and could not believe my eyes. My scalp was full of painful gooey scabs that extended onto my ears and parts of my forehead. Clumps of my bouncy hair were plastered to the oozing burns. It was disgusting. I went to work that day looking like Edward Scissorhands. These awful burns left a bald spot on top of my head that took SIX YEARS to grow back in. This was my last hair relaxer experience and it was a horrific one. I went natural and never looked back.
Do you have any relaxer horror hair stories?
If so, I would love to hear them.
