This is the first pic that was taken after my big chop in 1996 or 1997 (It’s been so long, that I’m not exactly sure of the year).
I transitioned for 9 or 10 months before I finally cut off all of the relaxed ends. I chopped off the permed hair myself, but soon after I went to a barber and he used the clippers to taper my cut.
During this time period, I had no idea what to do with my hair. The only hairstyle that I knew how to do was a roller-set, so I wore a roller-set consistently for 6 months after my big chop. My hair was pretty short, so I used small magnetic rollers on the top part of my hair and I used small cold wave rods around my ears and nape (or kitchen) area.
Back then, there was no Nappturality, Long Hair Care Forum, or video blogs on YouTube, so I bought books and magazines and tried to duplicate what I saw in them. Whenever, I had a day off of work or school I would practice doing other styles until I gained the confidence to wear them outside of the house.
I had no idea on what products to use, so I continued to use the same products that I used when I was relaxed. I continued to use Creme of Nature Moisturizing Shampoo, LeKair Cholesterol Conditioner, Moisture max oil moisturizing hair lotion, and Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion. Lottabody setting lotion was the only product that I was no longer happy with after I transitioned, so I started to use Soft Sheen Miss Cool 5-minute fast set to style my hair.
I had no freaking idea what I was doing, but I loved my new chemical free hair.
